ABOUT THE EDUCATION CENTER

The Texas Panhandle War Memorial Education Center is a bold effort with many objectives.

First and foremost, the Center will honor the efforts and sacrifice of veterans across the region, providing a place for reflection and healing.

The Center will also serve as an educational center for area youth, teaching the history of war over the past 240 years. Interactive displays will highlight conflicts in which U.S. servicemen and women have served and fought.

A special second floor area will be dedicated to veterans from the 26 counties within the Texas Panhandle.

Estimated at over 12,000 square feet, the Center will be located on the east side of War Memorial Veteran's Park on the grounds of the Randall County Annex.

The Education Center will include a multi-purpose event space, a theater venue and ample parking for tour buses.

Background and History

Created in 1992, The Texas Panhandle War Memorial (TPWM) honors veterans from the Texas Panhandle, who gave their time and lives to preserve our American Way of life.  The idea of the War Memorial to honor all veterans of the Texas Panhandle is credited to Mr. L.D. Weeks.  Mr. Weeks first got the idea when he noticed a park was being built on an empty lot south of the Randall County Annex at Georgia St. and I-27.

In April 1992, through the support of Chapter 297, Vietnam Veterans of America and other concerned citizens including Bill Willis, Pete Garcia, Terry Kirby, Richard Izatt, C.W. McMennamy and John Dodson, the TPWM received approval from the Commissioners Court in Canyon to proceed with the project.  In October 1994, the organization became incorporated as the Texas Panhandle War Memorial Foundation.  Through various fundraising efforts, the initial project was completed in 2002.  The Memorial Circle, a garden maintained by the local Potter-Randall County Master Gardeners, is planted with red, white and blue flowers and is punctuated by large granite monoliths describing each war and confrontation.  Beyond the monoliths are granite tablets featuring the names of those from the Texas Panhandle who died or are missing in action from the first World War through Iraq and Afghanistan wars.  In the center of the Memorial, three poles proudly fly the American, Texas and Prisoner of War flags.

In December 2014, the Randall County Commissioners voted to support the building of a state-of-the-art memorial and education center proposed by the Texas Panhandle War Memorial Board of Directors.  The primary purpose will be to educate present and future generations on the history and sacrifice of members of the military.

Components of the New Facility

The 12,500 square foot facility will be a teaching tool, informing the visiting public of every major American war and conflict fought in the last 240 years.

Key Elements intertwined throughout:

  • Exhibit space focused on the general history of the U.S. as it pertains to major conflicts in which the United States was engaged between 1775 and today.

  • Exhibit space focused on the people, industry, sacrifice and history of the Texas Panhandle and peripheral region over the last 150 years and how it pertains to the wars and conflicts that were fought during that time.

  • A multi-purpose indoor event space that will be predominately designed as a theater space for the public to watch a short, custom movie whose message is a synopsis to the Eduction Center in general.  The multi-purpose space will also have the ability to serve as an event space for lectures, press conferences, award ceremonies, receptions and dining events.

  • A range of support spaces designed for the effective function of the Education Center and the activities of the TPWM Board, including a conference room, offices, main visitor reception, a gift shop, catering kitchen, and dressing rooms for ceremonial events.

  • All areas of the Education Center will be handicapped accessible.
